Whether you're securing your home or managing access for guests, Z-Box makes it easy to add, configure, and manage your smart locks. This guide walks you through the steps to add a door lock, manage PIN codes, and understand system limitations and best practices. Z-Box supports most Z-Wave-enabled locks from brands such as Yale, Philips, Schlage, Kwikset, and August (which use a Z-Wave module).
Managing door locks through your Z-Box hub is simple, secure, and scalable. With support for user code scheduling, remote control, and smart automations, Z-Box puts peace of mind at your fingertips. Keep firmware up-to-date and review your user codes regularly to maintain a secure smart home.
Adding a Door Lock to Z-Box using Smart Start
SmartStart -enabled products can be added to Z-Box by scanning the Z-Wave QR Code present on the product first. For the best experience, make sure your door lock batteries are removed. Locate the QR code on your device and in your Z-Box Mobile App, navigate to More/Add Devices > Z-Wave Smart Start.
Choose Long Range or Classic Z-Wave pairing. You can wait till the configuration process finishes so you can rename the door lock and assign it to the room. Or you can exit the menu and manage the name and room once the door lock is included.
Adding a Door Lock to Z-Box Using the Standard Z-Box Inclusion Process
1. Put Z-Box in Inclusion Mode:
- Open the Z-Box web interface and navigate to Devices > Add Device > Choose Z-Wave > Start OR
- In the Mobile APP navigate to More > Add Device > Z-Wave Protocol.
2. Put the Lock in Pairing Mode
- Refer to your lock’s manual. Usually, this involves entering a programming code or pressing a button inside the lock.
3. Wait for Confirmation.
- The Z-Box will detect and add the lock.
- Assign it a name (e.g., Front Door) and room.
4. Test Lock Functionality
- Lock/unlock from the app.
- Check battery status and other lock attributes.
Operating the Door Lock from Z-Box Web Interface or Mobile APP
Web UI: Locate your door lock on the Z-Box Web Interface Dashboard menu. Simply press the device tile to lock or unlock the door lock. The device icon will change to indicate the door lock status.
Mobile App: locate your doorlock. You can lock or unlock it by pressing the appropriate lock/unlock button, or you can click on the lock and change the status from the lock menu. The app will show the updated lock status with haptic and visual feedback.
Managing PIN Codes
Z-Box makes it easy to manage access codes remotely — ideal for guests, service workers, or family members. To be able to set the pincodes from the interface, make sure your Z-Box hub is on 5.170 firmware version or higher.
If you added your lock on the firmware version that supports the PIN Codes, you will see the PIN Code option under the Advanced Tab for that lock. If you added it on the older firmware version, you will have to reconfigure your lock after the firmware upgrade. See Reconfiguring Your Door Lock section.
If you just added your door lock, you might have to synchronize your PIN Codes before you can add and manage the existing or new PIN codes. You will see the warning about your lock not being synchronized. If so, click Synchronize and allow a few minutes for the process to complete.
Adding a PIN Code
1. Go to the Settings menu of your Door Lock and click on the Advanced tab.
2. Tap the PIN Codes Configuration box and enter your PIN. You can also add a Label. Once done click ‘+’.
Your PIN will be added to the list of PINs, and it is ready to use.
Your door lock is fully synchronized with your hub. So any PIN (other than Master PIN code) added or deleted from the interface will be automatically removed from the device, and any PIN added or deleted on the physical device will be appropriately updated in the web interface.
Reconfiguring Your Door Lock
If your previously installed doorlock does not show you an option to add a PIN, you have to reconfigure it so that this new functionality can be enabled. Navigate to the Device Configuration tab under your door lock. Remove all the batteries and reinsert them all but ONE back.
Once ready, press Reconfigure Device and follow the prompts. Once the reconfiguration completes, you will see a successful completion message and your door lock will now show the PIN code menu. If the process failed, restart it again by removing the batteries and reattempting all the above steps.
