Create Smart Sprinklers with Z-Wave Relays on Z-Box Hub Using the Linked Devices Feature

Managing multiple sprinkler zones just got easier. With Z-Box's Linked Devices feature, you can combine several ZEN16 MultiRelays into a single, streamlined device. Each ZEN16 relay supports up to three independently controlled channels—ideal for operating separate sprinkler solenoid valves. By linking these relays through the Z-Box hub, you gain centralized control and smarter, more efficient watering across your entire lawn or garden.

What You'll Need:

  • ZEN16 MultiRelay: This relay will control the individual sprinkler zones.
  • Sprinkler System: Connect your sprinkler solenoid valves to each of the relay channels.
  • Z-Box hub: Your central controller to manage Z-Wave devices.
  • Waterproof connectors: For outdoor wiring and ensuring durability.

Step 1: Wiring Your Sprinkler System to ZEN16

Connect Your Sprinkler Valves: Wire each sprinkler solenoid valve to one of the relay channels on the ZEN16 MultiRelay. For detailed instructions on how to wire the Sprinkler System to ZEN16 refer to Wire The Zen16 Multirelay section in How to Use the ZEN16 Mutlielay as a Sprinkler Controller.

Note: The ZEN16 requires a 12V-24V AC/DC power source. Make sure the power supply is properly connected to the unit and that the power supply never exceeds 24V.

Step 2: Program the MultiRelay on Z-Box

  1. Include the ZEN16 MultiRelay to your Z-Box hub.
  2. The Z-Box should detect and add the ZEN16 MultiRelay to your device list. The ZEN16 will display each relay as a separate device, which you can rename for your purposes.

Step 3: Create Linked Devices

  1. After adding the ZEN16 MultiRelay, navigate to the Add Linked Devices section in Z-Box by going to Settings > Add Device > Other Devices.
  2. Select the Sprinklers category and select the devices that you want to be linked.
  3. Select the individual relays of the ZEN16 (Relays 1-3) and combine them into a single Linked Device. All the zones can be controlled as a unified device through the Z-Box interface. If applicable, you can also add soil moisture sensor and humidity level to turn off watering.

Step 4: Creating Automation for Smart Watering

  1. Schedule Watering: Use Z-Box's Garden automation feature to create schedules for when the newly created sprinkler should turn on/off. Scheduling is available under the Garden submenu of the Settings.
  2. Add Triggers: You can integrate weather conditions or soil moisture sensors to optimize watering. For instance, use rain data to prevent watering on rainy days or adjust the watering schedule based on soil moisture readings.
  3. Adding sequences: can enable you to run multiple sprinklers in a specific order.
